Profile

Jessica concentrates her practice on a broad array of cases and issues for health care clients, including regulatory and operational compliance, litigation, corporate, and long term care issues.  Prior to joining Poyner & Spruill, she represented academic medical centers, hospitals, physicians, nurses, and nursing homes in alleged medical malpractice claims and lawsuits.  Jessica is also a Registered Nurse and a prior Captain in the U.S. Army. 

Representative Experience

Served on active duty as a medical-surgical and surgical critical care nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. 

As a Clinical Charge Nurse in a 300-bed Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, coordinated the care of critically ill patients; supervised professionals and paraprofessionals; and developed and implemented a formal program for continuing education and for training newly assigned critical care nurses.

As a Clinical Staff Nurse in a 450-bed Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, provided specialized care to postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients; served as a senior mentor for newly assigned nurses; organized a Critical Care Seminar and delivered a presentation to 100 health care professionals; and served as Junior Officer Council representative to senior leadership of the medical center.   

Attended the U.S. Army Medical Command Critical Care Nursing Course and prepared a program on Post-Resuscitative Care approved for continuing education credit.

As a part-time Research Assistant in the Research Division of the North Carolina General Assembly, worked with attorneys, representatives, and senators on tort reform and health policy issues.
