RALEIGH, NC –
Steven Mansfield Shaber, a Partner in Poyner Spruill’s Health Care Practice Group, has been appointed to the North Carolina Medical Society’s Physician Hospital Issues Committee for 2009 as an attorney consultant.
The Physician Hospital Issues Committee was created to address issues facing physicians in their relationships with hospitals, from contractual arrangements to on-call issues and peer review. As the largest physician organization in the state, the North Carolina Medical Society devotes itself to representing the interests of physicians and protecting the quality of patient care.
Shaber has spent his entire career in health law -- first with the North Carolina Attorney General's Office and, since 1985, in private practice. His clients range from large hospitals to sole practitioners. Most of his work focuses on provider reimbursement, hospital medical staff matters, and professional licensing board cases. His cases have involved patient deaths, adulterated drugs, professional misconduct, substance abuse, and million-dollar claims for recoupment. Shaber has also helped providers with a number of innovative business transactions. He speaks frequently to various professional organizations, including the North Carolina Medical Society, the North Carolina Psychological Association, and the North Carolina Hospital Association.
Shaber graduated from Wabash College
magna cum laude in 1973 with a B.A. degree, and received his J.D. from Duke University in 1976. He can be reached at 919.783.2906 or
