RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 3, 2017 — A brewery co-founded by Poyner Spruill attorney Deborah Sperati, Koi Pond Brewing Company, has been selected as to serve samples at the North Carolina Governor’s Inaugural Ball Jan. 7.

“We appreciate the Junior League of Raleigh including a biergarten this year to showcase our state’s dynamic, creative craft brewing industry,” said Sperati, who is a partner in the financial services section and also chairs the firm’s brewery, winery and distillery law practice. “We’re honored that Koi Pond was asked to be one of the craft brewers serving samples in the biergarten.”

Koi Pond, based in Rocky Mount, has been brewing beer since 2014. In January 2016, it opened a full taproom and brewery in a 180-year old mill home in the historic Rocky Mount Mills village.

In October, Koi Pond’s Strawberry Lotus Saison took first place in the fruit beer category in the annual N.C. Brewer’s Cup, organized by the N.C. Craft Brewers Guild.

“We were especially thrilled that among all the submissions, a beer featuring local products was awarded the gold,” Sperati said. “The strawberries were straight from the Rocky Mount farmer’s market and the honey used in all our saisons is from the bee bus run by the kids at the Conetoe Family Life Center. It is critically important to us to showcase local produce and support local charities.”

“Koi Pond is focused on brewing IPAs, stouts, witbiers and other flavorful selections that incorporate local ingredients,” said Eric Ghiloni, a Koi Pond co-founder and the head brewer. Ghiloni and his wife Mary, along with Sperati and her husband Matthew, are Koi Pond’s founding partners.

The Inaugural Ball will take place at the Talley Student Center at N.C. State University. Besides the biergarten, the ball will also feature food stations and chef’s stations from North Carolina restaurants. Several bands representing different styles of music will also perform.
