RALEIGH, N.C. — Poyner Spruill partner and former congressman Mike McIntyre received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina School of Law during the Alumni Association’s Annual Law Leadership and Awards Dinner earlier this month in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is given each year to a UNC School of Law graduate whose accomplishments and contributions have enhanced the school and the profession of law at the local, state, national, or international level. McIntyre earned his Juris Doctor from the school in 1981.
Before joining Poyner Spruill as the Senior Advisor and Director of Government Relations, McIntyre served as Congressman of North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years.
“I am truly thankful for the opportunity to serve,” McIntyre said. “UNC School of Law was instrumental in preparing me for my career in public service and private practice, and I deeply appreciate the school’s graciousness in presenting this award. I will always cherish the memories with my family from this night.”
McIntyre, a leader on issues that impact North Carolina families, co-chaired both the Congressional Prayer Caucus and the Task Force on Responsible Fatherhood, as well as having founded and served as chairman of the Congressional Caucus on Youth Sports. He has served on the board of the U.S. Naval Academy and was one of only nine members of the U.S. House appointed to serve on the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Secretary of the Navy has presented him with the Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest civilian award given by the Navy, for his exceptional leadership and work on behalf of the Navy and Marine Corps. He also was unanimously selected for Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake, Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service by the N.C. Bar Association last year.
