Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

Poyner Spruill LLP is pleased to announce partner Randall R. Adams and associates Brett A. Carpenter and Christopher S. Dwight each served as a video presenter at USLAW NETWORK’s first-ever virtual retreat, where each spoke on his area of expertise.

As part of its 2020 conference, USLAW launched the Home Field Advantage, a video project where USLAW members share insights and boots-on-the-ground knowledge on the latest legal happenings impacting labor and employment in each state and in select global markets. The video library is only available to those who register for the free, virtual event. Adams, Carpenter, and Dwight each presented on a different topic as part of the Home Field Advantage video series.

In his video presentation, Adams outlined recent changes and trends in North Carolina law and legislation that have impacted civil litigation in the state. While the state has historically been incredibly friendly to defense attorneys, Adams is starting to see a higher rate of verdicts and settlements, along with larger monetary values. This is especially true in the personal injury space, which has seen monumental growth in North Carolina over the last five years.

Carpenter covered labor and employment law for North Carolina in his presentation, emphasizing the state’s new COVID-19 Liability Safe Harbor law, which essentially protects companies from liability claims and lawsuits related to COVID-19 exposure and illness. Carpenter also outlined the guidance released by various federal agencies to aid companies in reopening offices.

In a video presentation focused on general business law in the state, Dwight shared insights on M&A deals in North Carolina and how the pipeline has changed since the pandemic began. While it was a seller’s market with strong, stable pricing pre-COVID-19, the state is just now starting to see a restart of the M&A market. Dwight comments that he is starting to see more stability and less uncertainty around deals.

The 10-day conference ran from Sept. 30-Oct. 9 and was designed for legal decision-makers. The retreat covers everything from upcoming legislation and emerging technologies to how COVID-19 has impacted the claims environment and how recent decisions are impacting overall policies and operations.

USLAW NETWORK is an international, invite-only organization of nearly 100 independent, defense-based law firms with more than 6,000 attorneys covering the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
