Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

RALEIGH, NC – Founded in 2016, the McIntyre-Whichard Legal Fellows Program is now in its second year of existence at the University of North Carolina School of Law. The program was founded by two UNC Law School alums and is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Study Center and the UNC Christian Legal Society. The program is named after Poyner Spruill partner and former U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre and former N.C. Supreme Court Justice Willis Whichard, who are both alums of the university and serve as program mentors. Program mentors are matched with a student for a year-long mentorship in which they focus on both professional and spiritual growth.

McIntyre has devoted much of his career to supporting development and growth opportunities for youth, having established the Mike McIntyre Justice Fund through the North Carolina Bar Foundation which created the McIntyre Youth Leadership Challenge. When asked about what his involvement with the McIntyre-Whichard Legal Fellows Program means to him, he had this to say: “I am grateful that this mentoring fellows program has really been a huge success…It has been a great encouragement to both the mentors and the mentees to have these positive opportunities for interaction with the next generation of leaders for our state and nation.”

In addition to McIntyre, firm partner Robin Pipkin also serves as a mentor. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with and help law students in a mentorship capacity,” Pipkin says about the program.

The vision, listed on the program’s website, is to connect “Christian law student “Fellows” with lawyers of faith to foster the next generation of Christ-centered leaders in the legal profession.” The McIntyre-Whichard Legal Fellows Program will be looking for participant applications by the end of the summer for their 2018-2019 class.
