Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Eastern District of North Carolina chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) honored Poyner Spruill partner David Long last week with its second annual Judge David W. Daniel Award for Excellence in the Legal Community.

Created last year in memory of Magistrate Judge David Daniel to honor his integrity, commitment, and service to the legal community, the award honors one attorney who has shown a commitment to the legal profession in the Eastern District of North Carolina and to the clients and community they serve. To qualify, a nominee must practice in the Eastern District of North Carolina and must exemplify the ideals of the legal profession and further the goals of equal justice under the law.

Long becomes the second person to earn the distinction, joining inaugural winner Thomas P. McNamara.

“I’m humbled and flattered to receive this award since it honors the memory of my dear friend David Daniel,” Long says. “To be the second recipient following Tom McNamara adds to its significance.”

Long received the honor Friday, Feb. 23, during the FBA Eastern District of North Carolina chapter’s Continuing Legal Education event.

Since starting his career with a two-year stint as an assistant United States attorney in the Eastern District of North Carolina, Long has spent the next 50-plus years with Poyner Spruill. His practice involves representation of individuals and businesses in a wide range of investigations and federal criminal cases in North Carolina and other states, in addition to a robust civil practice focusing on business litigation.

Long has extensive experience litigating in federal and North Carolina state courts, and his clients have included a number of elected officials, other lawyers, judges, professionals, executives, business owners, and businesses ranging from publicly traded companies to one-member LLCs.

The Federal Bar Association, founded in 1920, is dedicated to the advancement of the science of jurisprudence and to promoting the welfare, interests, education and professional development of all attorneys involved in federal law. Members run the gamut, from attorneys practicing in small to large legal firms to attorneys in corporations and federal agencies to members of the judiciary.

The FBA prides itself on being the catalyst for communication between the bar and the bench, as well as the private and public sectors.
