Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

The North Carolina State Bar has named Poyner Spruill partner Drew Erteschik as a board-certified specialist in appellate practice. Drew joins only one other attorney in achieving this distinction in 2015. Since the inception of the appellate practice specialty in North Carolina, the State Bar has recognized only 30 other lawyers as appellate practice specialists.

To become board-certified as an appellate practice specialist, lawyers must devote a significant portion of their practice to handling appeals, receive favorable peer review evaluations from appellate lawyers and appellate judges, author a substantial number of appellate briefs, present a substantial number of appellate oral arguments, and pass a rigorous written examination in appellate practice and procedure. “The qualification and testing requirements for becoming an appellate specialist are extremely high,” said Bo Dempster, Managing Partner at Poyner Spruill. “We congratulate Drew on this achievement, and we’re thrilled to have his appellate expertise to offer our clients.”

Drew’s practice at Poyner Spruill is focused on complex civil litigation and appeals. He frequently handles cases involving government-related disputes and often represents clients in constitutional litigation. While in private practice, Drew taught appellate advocacy as an adjunct professor at the UNC School of Law. He currently serves on the Appellate Rules Committee of the NC Bar Association, the Section Council of the NC Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section, and the Amicus Committee of the ABA Judicial Division. In 2015, he was appointed to the North Carolina Commission on the Administration of Law and Justice, the newly created state commission responsible for performing a comprehensive evaluation of North Carolina’s court system.
