What to Expect and How to Prepare as OCR Begins HIPAA Audits – In November 2011, as required by the HITECH Act, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) began auditing selected covered entities’ compliance with the privacy and security provisions of HIPAA and its implementing regulations.

“Bad Hair Day” Case Reveals Lessons for Facility Managers – The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) prohibits employers from disciplining or discriminating against employees who engage in “concerted activity.” Under the NLRA, protected concerted activity includes, among other things, two or more employees discussing wages, hours, or working conditions.

North Carolina to Join Ranks of States Requiring Employers to Enroll in E-Verify – The North Carolina Legislature passed a bill that will gradually require all private employers with more than 25 employees to use the federal online E-Verify program to verify the employment authorization of newly hired employees. The bill, HB 36, was passed on June 18, 2011, and was signed into law by Governor Beverly Perdue on June 23, 2011, as Session Law 2011-263.

CMCS Launches New Medicaid Website – The Center for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Services (CMCS) now has an official government website designed to make more information and resources available about these programs.
