These honorees represent the most influential individuals within our state’s legal community.

Ken Burgess is a health care attorney with over 30 years of experience advising clients on a wide range of regulatory, litigation, compliance and operations issues. His practice focuses heavily, but not exclusively, on issues affecting long term care and acute care providers. Ken advises providers on legal issues arising in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, hospice, home health, ancillary providers (pharmacy, DME, therapy, etc.), and other spheres of health care. He advises on Certificate of Need, Medicare/Medicaid enrollment and licensure issues, appeals of quality of care issues, and transactional matters. Ken is a frequent national lecturer and author of industry manuals, national trade journal magazine articles and similar training tools and is primary author and editor of Poyner Spruill’s international award winning newsletter, Shorts on Long Term Care.

Karen Chapman is a commercial litigation attorney in the Charlotte office. Karen’s litigation practice includes representing businesses and financial institutions with respect to commercial contract disputes, collections, unfair and deceptive trade practice claims, lender liability claims, and other business torts. Karen also defends various individuals and companies with respect to allegations of professional malpractice. Karen has experience in all stages of litigation and her clients benefit from her ability to quickly analyze a dispute and develop a strategic defense.
