RALEIGH, N.C. – Poyner Spruill LLP partner Kelsey Mayo led two breakout sessions and took part in an “Ask the Experts” panel during the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA) Employee Benefits Plan Conference on Tuesday, May 14 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Mayo’s first session, entitled “Digging Deeper: Uncovering and Preventing Fraud,” outlined how fraud can occur in employee benefit plans and the impact it can have on companies and auditors. This included a look at real-life examples of fraud involving plans and what red flags might have been missed.
In the afternoon, Mayo spoke on the topic of “Top 10 Plan Sponsor Mistakes.” The session covered the options for correcting plan errors — both before and after an audit — and common errors that an auditor may find when reviewing completed corrections.
The one-day session concluded with an “Ask the Experts” panel featuring Mayo and four other professionals.
The NCACPA’s leaders and staff monitor changes within the profession and ensure members have the resources they need through events, training, and other guidance. The Employee Benefits Conference offers CPAs and other professionals the opportunity to learn more about industry updates from national and local experts while connecting peers from around the state.
