Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

Poyner Spruill LLP Managing Partner Dan Cahill has been named a Managing Partner to Watch by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly for the third year in a row. This distinction underscores Cahill’s sustained leadership and accomplishments.

Cahill has served as Managing Partner since 2017. He has guided Poyner Spruill through periods of growth and change, and his accomplishments include proactively preparing the firm for future challenges, demonstrated by the early adoption of a cloud-based system prior to COVID-19-related office shutdowns; executing Poyner Spruill’s five-year strategic plan, which focused on growth, diversity, client service, and an enhanced firm culture; and fostering open communication with all firm employees.

In addition to his role as Managing Partner, Cahill serves as the firm’s assistant general counsel and loss prevention partner. A life-long resident of Raleigh, Cahill remains engaged in the community. He serves on the Board of Directors for The Green Chair Project and the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, where he was the Chair in 2023. He is also involved in the Campbell Law School Mentorship Program.

“Dan’s impact on Poyner Spruill cannot be overstated,” said Chad Essick, who will succeed Cahill as Managing Partner in 2026. “He has guided us through change with vision and steadiness, always keeping our people and clients at the center of every decision. Dan leaves behind a culture of collaboration and trust that will continue to shape our future. As I step into this role, I am honored to build upon the strong foundation he has created and to continue his commitment to excellence.”

Cahill focuses his practice on complex commercial disputes, representing banks and financial institutions in all types of litigation. He also devotes a portion of his practice to providing professional liability defense for lawyers and architects. As a Certified Mediator, Cahill counsels clients on alternative dispute resolution.

Earlier this year, the firm announced that Essick has been elected as the next Managing Partner, effective April 1, 2026. Learn more about the planned leadership transition.
