Poyner Spruill Welcomes Education Law Practice Group

RALEIGH, N.C. — Poyner Spruill LLP is pleased to announce the move of the firm’s Rocky Mount office to newly renovated office space inside the Rocky Mount Mills complex, a picturesque 150-acre mixed-use development on the Tar River.

Poyner Spruill relocated 25 attorneys and legal professionals to about 8,000 square feet of space on the lower floor of a two-story structure on the campus. Capitol Broadcasting Company is leading the reinvention of Rocky Mount Mills, which was established in 1818 and is believed to be the second-oldest cotton mill in North Carolina. The facility closed in 1996 but has recently undergone renovations to bring together residential, commercial, cultural, and entertainment amenities in one unique destination.

The redevelopment takes advantage of the historic plank floors, stout timbers, and intricate brickwork of the storied location that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“We at Poyner Spruill are thrilled to be part of the Rocky Mount Mills project,” says Dan Cahill, managing partner at Poyner Spruill. “We are excited about continuing our century-old presence in Rocky Mount in a beautiful, historic building on the Tar River. The Mill area offers a vibrant view of the renewal taking place in Rocky Mount.”

Poyner Spruill’s roots in Rocky Mount are deep, dating back to the early 1900s when Frank Spruill moved his law practice to the area from Henderson, North Carolina. That practice grew to include many prominent attorneys with their own ties to eastern North Carolina. Even after Spruill’s firm merged with the Raleigh-based firm of Poyner, Geraghty, Hartsfield and Townsend in 1986, the firm continued its uninterrupted presence, service, and leadership here in the community.

The new office space was completely empty and unfinished until Poyner Spruill signed the lease and upfitted the area, essentially making it a new build-out.

“With this move to the historic Rocky Mount Mills, we are renewing and strengthening our commitment to this region,” says Tim Wilson, Poyner Spruill’s Rocky Mount office management committee member. “Poyner Spruill is a North Carolina-based law firm that places a high value on a local presence while providing services nationwide. We are focused on adding value to our clients’ businesses through quality legal counsel and excellent service, and our attorneys and staff look forward to calling this new office home while we endeavor to meet those expectations.”
